Excellent used value. Permanent magnets are very stable long-term. Early Spinsolve 60 units (2014-2017) occasionally had shimming issues but most were addressed. The Carbon model adds 13C but expect very long acquisition times. Strong resale market means pricing is predictable.

While they cannot match the resolution of 400-600 MHz research instruments, modern benchtop units provide sufficient resolution to distinguish most organic functional groups and confirm synthetic products. The key value proposition is accessibility—no magnet quench risk, minimal maintenance, small footprint, and operation by non-specialists. Many units connect via USB and feature automated shimming, making them nearly push-button for routine samples. Flow cells enable continuous reaction monitoring, while temperature control options allow kinetic studies. For teaching, they democratize NMR access; for industry, they move QC from a bottleneck to a routine benchtop operation.
The Spinsolve series set the standard for benchtop NMR when they launched in 2014 and remain the resolution leader. The 80 MHz version offers excellent linewidth (<0.5 Hz), true multinuclear capability (1H, 19F, 13C, 31P options), and the most mature software ecosystem. Strong academic presence means good documentation and community support. Magritek pioneered many features others copied: automated shimming, reaction monitoring software, and educational packages.
What you lose: Lower field strength (45-60 MHz vs 80 MHz) means overlapping peaks for complex molecules, longer 13C acquisition times (hours vs tens of minutes), and inability to resolve closely-spaced multiplets. Older software lacks modern automation and database matching. Single-nucleus capability limits applications.
What you keep: Core functionality for structure confirmation of known or expected compounds, reaction monitoring capabilities, routine QC of bulk materials, excellent teaching utility, and dramatically lower barrier to NMR access compared to high-field instruments.
For GMP environments, ensure 21 CFR Part 11 compliant software is available (Magritek, Nanalysis, and Oxford offer this). Verify IQ/OQ documentation can be provided. Used instruments may require re-qualification which adds $3,000-8,000 to total cost. Some QC applications require specific validated methods—confirm instrument can achieve required resolution and sensitivity for your monographs.
